Eyesight improves when people expect to have especially keen vision
Imagine seeing better by thinking differently. That’s a vision with a future, according to Harvard University psychologist Ellen Langer.
Eyesight markedly improved when people were experimentally induced to believe that they could see especially well, Langer and her colleagues report in the April Psychological Science. Such expectations actually enhanced visual clarity, rather than simply making volunteers more alert or motivated to focus on objects, they assert.
Langer’s new findings build on long-standing evidence that visual perception depends not just on relaying information from …

They are taken to exams, job interviews and weddings in the hope they will bring good fortune.
But rather than being mere superstition, lucky charms do actually work, psychologists claim.
Researchers told half the golfers on a putting green that they were playing with a lucky ball, and the rest that they were playing with a normal one.
The research found that golfers given a ‘lucky ball’ managed to sink 35 per cent more putts than those who were playing with an ordinary ball.
Those with the lucky ball sank 6.4 putts out of …

The brains of some elderly people with super-sharp memory seem to escape the formation of destructive “tangles” that increase with normal aging and peak in people with Alzheimer’s. A study of the brains of people who stayed mentally sharp into their 80s and beyond challenges the notion that brain changes linked to mental decline and Alzheimer’s disease are a normal, inevitable part of aging.
In a presentation at the 239th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society (ACS), Changiz Geula, principal investigator of the Northwestern University Super Aging Project and a …

The belief in telepathy is deeply rooted in many of us, and not only science fiction fans. Mothers ring their daughters thousands of miles away, and their daughters say, “How did you know? I was just thinking of you”. We walk into a room and we just get a feeling about someone: it is as if we knew what they were thinking, and what they will say next.
Professors of parapsychology and there are a few have been unable to replicate these results in the laboratory. Minds they have to conclude …

A system that creates “brain to brain communication” has been developed by British scientists, it has been claimed.
The system, developed by a team at the University of Southampton, is said to be the first technology that would allow people to send thoughts, words and images directly to the minds of others, particularly people with a disability.
It has also been hailed as the future of the internet, which would provide a new way to communicate without the need for keyboards and telephones.
“This could be useful for those people who are locked …

“Don’t spend a lot of time with old people, they just make you feel older,” my 96-year old grandmother told me at our latest luncheon.
After finishing off a large Caesar Salad and her second glass of Ice Tea, she stood and pointed to her new three inch caramel-colored Ferragamo heels she bought on sale. “Aren’t they just darling?” she asked.
“They match my sweater set just perfectly,” she said as she skimmed her body like a Miss USA contestant.
This continual zest for life and fun is just one trait that makes …

Subliminal advertising really does work, claim scientists who found that people subconsciously respond to flashed messages – especially if they are negative.
By Richard Alleyne
Researchers found that briefly displaying words and images so quickly that people do not even consciously notice, does nevertheless change their thinking.
They found it was particularly effective with negative images and words which could alter a person’s mood.
The phrase subliminal advertising was coined in 1957 by the US market researcher James Vicary, who said he could get moviegoers to “drink Coca-Cola” and “eat popcorn” by flashing those …

Who cares if money can’t buy you love? It can still be your BFF.
That’s one of the surprising findings in a new Chinese-American academic research paper, “The Symbolic Power of Money,” published in the journal Psychological Science.
Like any best friend forever, money demonstrated to researchers its ability to soothe us, reduce our sense of social exclusion and even lessen …

The research shows men who spend even a few minutes in the company of an attractive woman perform less well in tests designed to measure brain function than those who chat to someone they do not find attractive.
Researchers who carried out the study, published in the Journal of Experimental and Social Psychology, think the reason may be that men use up so much of their brain function or ‘cognitive resources’ trying to impress beautiful women, they have little left for other tasks.
The findings have implications for the performance of men …
